Staring at the Ground

Notes

Per: I think this lands in a very interesting middle ground, just between uptempo and ballad. Marie: Nothing for the dance floor, but a good album track. A lot of interesting things going on in the background. I like it. Per: What do you mean, nothing for the dance floor? I can dance to this. Give me a bottle of wine and I’ll show you.

Per: This demo was recorded at Tits & Ass on 29 August 1997. Always loved this song (it’s actually Clarence’s fave also from Have a Nice Day too… he’s got exquisite taste, right?). Strange piano-section in the middle (which we removed on the “real” recording in Spain) otherwise it’s right up my alley! Great vocals by Marie. As always.

Roxette – Original Version 2:58

I’m staring at the ground
I’m bloodless thrown away from the sun
What’s lost cannot be found
I can’t return your tears
If I ever live to be a thousand years

I’m staring at the ground
I never wished you a broken heart
Coincidence put you down
He won’t withdraw those tears
If you ever lived to be a thousand years

What do I have to say to make you stay?
What do I have to do to make you happy?

I’m staring at the ground
I wish I could bring the spring to your door
To the coldest side of town
I carry your wounded dreams
Like the devil’s deeds in the pocket of my jeans

What do I have to say to make you stay?
What do I have to do to make you happy?
