Dressed for Success

Notes

Per: This was the first single of the Look Sharp!-album in Sweden. I think this is one of Marie’s best vocals performances ever. Marie: I was so mad when I did it. Everything about the session went wrong, we argued about the arrangement, we changed the key, I was dead tired of the song when I went in to do a guide vocal. Did it in one blast and suddenly realized, “hmm… this is it”. Per: We were knocked out in the control room. All thumbs up, all differences forgotten and no need at all to mention the war. Marie: In the beginning we used to misunderstand each other quite a lot. Per had all these ideas that he tried to communicate. “No, that’s not the important word, do it more this way”… it could make me really mad sometimes, as in this case. Per: How to turn anger into hit singles.

– Don’t Bore Us – Get to the Chorus! liner notes, 1995

One of the first bona-fide bubblegum pop songs Marie ever recorded, “Dressed for Success” established Roxette as an act to be reckoned with. After “The Look” and its somewhat freakish success, the group were written off as one-hit wonders by some of the major American radio networks. Consequently they didn’t list the follow-up for airplay. Despite this it still managed to reach an impressive #14 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, convincing the sceptics and paving the way for the next batch of singles. Thanks to Per’s and producer Clarence Öfwerman’s manic coaching in the control room, Marie let loose an inspired performance. “Do it like this… do it like that… I was so pissed off by their nagging that I did the song in one take”, she laughs.

Roxette – Original Version 4:11

Tried to make it little by little
Tried to make it bit by bit on my own
Quit the job
The great believers
Another town where I get close to the bone

Whatcha gonna tell your brother?
Oh oh oh
Whatcha gonna tell your father?
I don’t know!
Whatcha gonna tell your mother?
Let me go…

I’m gonna get dressed for success
Shaping me up for the big time, baby
Get dressed for success
Shaping it up for your love
Yeah yeah yeah

I’m not afraid
A trembling flower
I’ll feed your heart and blow the dust from your eyes
And in the dark
Things happen faster
I love the way you sway your hips next to mine

Whatcha gonna tell your brother?
Oh oh oh
Whatcha gonna tell your father?
I don’t know!
Whatcha gonna tell your mother?
Let me go…

I’m gonna get dressed for success
Hitting a spot for the big time, baby
Get dressed for success
Shaping it up for your love
Look sharp!
